Every week in Southeast Alaska carries a different energy on the water.
Understanding that rhythm helps you choose not just when to visit, but what kind of experience you want to have.
Early Season: King Salmon
King salmon, also known as Chinook, begin moving through our waters in early summer. These fish are large, powerful and deliberate. They travel deep, often holding along underwater ledges and current seams where bait concentrates.
Hooking a King is not frantic. It is heavy. Intentional. The kind of powerful fight that demands patience and steady pressure.
June into early July is ideal for guests focused on trophy opportunity and measured, strategic fishing.
Mid to Late Season: Silver Salmon
By mid to late summer, Silver salmon arrive in strong numbers.
Silvers are aggressive feeders. They strike hard, run fast, and frequently move higher in the water column. That means more visual action and, at times, multiple hookups in a single tide swing.
Late July through August often brings high energy days with steady action.
The Constant: Opportunity
Halibut, lingcod, and rockfish provide consistent opportunity throughout the season, adding depth to every trip regardless of timing.
There is no wrong week at Steamboat Bay. There are simply different experiences shaped by migration patterns, water temperature, and tide movement.
Our team monitors seasonal transitions closely to align guests with peak opportunity.
